seminar title From vision to reality, urban planning through a runner’s eyes.

This tour will take you on an active and engaging running adventure through some
of Ottawa’s most scenic sites along the Ottawa River. The main focus of the tour will
be to explore the vision behind Ottawa’s identity as the Canadian capital and
establish how this is reflected by the spaces and places along the downtown riverfront.
In particular, we examine the history of urban planning within the National Capital
Region, past, current, and future developments, and the sustainability of these
projects and their practices within the fragile ecosystem of the river.
The tour begins in front of Ottawa’s most iconic site, Parliament Hill and leads down
to the Capital Pathway Network that follows the Ottawa River on both the Ottawa,
ON and Gatineau, QC waterfronts. As we make our way along the pathway, we stop
at a handful of locations such as Victoria Island and the Canadian Museum of History
to consider some of the visionaries behind Ottawa’s capital identity. We will also
consider what it takes to imbue a place and a space with meaning and ultimately what
that means for those who reside, work, and visit these places and spaces.
